I am interested in how these recycled books come with their own histories of use and meaning and how they serve as potent vehicles of expression. With the idea of working with them as my canvas or building block, I transform the books into sculptures that explore and redefine the book as familiar object, medium, and archetypal form. By scrambling the formal arrangement of the book and transposing its material and conceptual qualities, I aim to create evocative art forms that suggest an alternative narrative."

The Lead in his Pencil

Dalton Ghetti does the most wow things with pencils.

This Brazilian carpenter started sculpting pencils in class as a boy. Using a razor blade, sewing needle and a bright light, he has no need for a magnifying glass but does limit himself to just an hour & a half a day to save his eyes. His alphabet series took him two and a half years to complete.

Jeff Nishinaka the Paper Guy

A sculptor. Of paper.

"I have always wanted to be a painter...I was given assignments in both a graphic design and fashion drawing class at the same time to experiment in different mediums, one of them being paper.  That was my 'Ah-ha!' moment. From then on, I began experimenting with different papers, finding ways to shape, bend, and round edges on it." Focusing on ways to manipulate paper whilst maintaining its papery integrity this LA native, after 28 years, has mastered his craft.
