Simplicity

Love the tranquil simplicity of this image. Lines & shadows.

Cannot for the life of me remember where I found it. Sorry.

Francis Kéré

Francis Kéré's big heart & sheer enthusiasm and vibrant personality won me over before I had even heard of his life changing architectural feats. Born in Burkina Faso, educated at the Technische Universität Berlin, Francis Kéré is focused on developing the infrastructure for education in his home country of Burkina Faso. Building sustainable schools for an African climate at low cost, utilising local materials and the potential of the local people, inspiring ownership, inspiring change.

Tadao Ando

One of my most favourite architects. It's hard to believe that Osaka-born Tadao Ando, whose creative use of geometric aesthetic and light to create the most inspiring and awe-filling spaces, has no formal training and learnt all he knows from books and the study of buildings themselves.

“I was never a good student. I always preferred learning things on my own outside of class. When I was about 18, I started to visit temples, shrines and tea houses in Kyoto and nara; There’s a lot of great traditional architecture in the area. I was studying architecture by going to see actual building, and reading books about them.”

Inspired by Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Aalto, Frank Lloyd Wright & Louis Kahn,  Tadao Ando spent the years between 1962 and 1969 travelling Europe, Africa and the US studying and sketching buildings, but returned to his native Japan where he began applying his self taught methods to building designs of his own, founding Tadao Ando Architectural & Associates in Osaka in 1969.

"Aesthetics also include things like a sense of responsibility and a sense of justice. They also incorporate a respect for other people and for nature, an appreciation of the gift of life, and courtesy. They even extend to the ability to look at the world around one, properly." A message from Ando.

Cape Town, Kaapstad, Slaapstad

One of my most favourite things to do in the whole wide world, is to walk the streets of Cape Town on a sunny day taking pictures of our beautiful historical buildings pretending I have stepped into that world of old.

An Act of Faith : Deutsche Evangelische Lutherische St. Martini Kirche

Deutsche Evangelische Lutherische St. Martini Kirche : Long Street, Cape Town

Founded 150 years ago by German immigrants, The German Evangelical Lutheran St. Martini Church of Cape Town is situated at one end of one of Cape Town's oldest streets and still has mostly German services.

There were a number of German Lutherans among the first settlers in the Cape, however they were limited in their freedom of worship according to the Peace of Augsberg of 1555 which stated that "the ruler of a specific area determined the religious orientation of his subjects". Requests made by the Lutherans for a preacher of their own were denied. However in 1774 Martin Melck sponsored a warehouse in Strand Street and thus being able to prove that the Lutherans had the necessary funds to build a church and finance a preacher, the Lutherans were granted permission to worship freely in 1780. The warehouse was converted into a church and after a split in its congregation occurred in 1853 - the Long Street church of St. Martini was formed. Shortly afterwards in 1861, the church was officially inaugurated as the Deutsche Evangelische Lutherische St. Martini Kirche.

See the church's website for more info & for more info on the Lutheran faith visit this website.

New Warehouse for SACD Freight | Cape Town

Old Mutual Business School | Cape Town

House Ritchie | Natal Midlands

Started in October 2004 by Victoria Perry and Stuart Anderson, this architecture firm is one to watch. Choosing to keep their practice small, working with people rather than having anyone work for them, they produce an outstanding level of work catering to each specific clients' needs, whether residential, corporate or industrial. "We love what we do and always strive to work with the same integrity, honesty and passion from design concept through to construction on site, regardless of the size and nature of project".
