A textile design student hailing from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Laduma Ngxokolo, winner of the
Society of Dyers and Colourists International Design Award 2010, wowed me with his traditional Xhosa beadwork-inspired mohair knitwear which was originally designed as a solution for abakhwetha (Xhosa initiaties) who have to burn their entire wardrobe after circumcision. Top of any abakhwetha's new must-have fashion item list is high quality knitwear, predominantly internationally designed & produced argyle cardigans, so Laduma decided to offer a more local fashion option celebrating the Xhosa culture in colour, design, material & production. Maxhosa knitwear is now on everyone's must have fashion item list!
Laduuuuuuuuuuuuma!
