Frauke Stegmann

Namibian-born Frauke Stegmann studied graphic design in Germany, did a post-graduate degree at the Royal College of Art in London, lives in Cape Town & has a client list which includes Miu Miu, Fernando & Humberto Campana, Jarvis Cocker, Peter Saville and SHOWstudio. In an interview with i-D Magazine, who named her one of 40 best new global designers, Stegmann says her work emphasizes "a return to the craft of design, to tactility in print, and a movement away from superficiality and speed".

These signature embossed motifs are produced by one of only two craftsmen in England who are still able to hand-engrave for print once Stegmann draws the illustrations which are then reproduced as dies.

"Some people think I’m a product designer; I’m not. I do what I like to call “subjective inquiries” into my immediate environment. I look around me, and, like an independent journalist or a writer, I gather and curate information on something that I find relevant, and this determines the subject matter of a potential project". Look out for Stegmann's porcelain pieces and take a swing by her Birds Boutique Café on Bree Street, Cape Town.
