The Cathedral Church of St. George the Martyr: Wale St, Cape Town
St. George's Cathedral is still incomplete after wars, deppressions & recessions. It was in 1834 that St. George's church first opened its doors for service and in June 1847 that it was named a cathedral in anticipation of the arrival of the first Bishop of Cape Town, Robert Gray. Disappointed by the architecture, Robert Gray put forward a proposal to reconstruct the Cathedral making it more worthy of the Mother City. Gray passed away and since then the reconstruction of the Cathedral has progressed slowly.
During Apartheid this cathedral, also known as The People's Cathedral, openly advertised its acceptance of all races at all times. "Week after week it was packed with protesters and opponents of the government to be addressed by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and speakers from all spectra of political opposition. The cathedral became a focus of opposition and on occasion could be seen surrounded by barbed wire, police vans and water-cannons".
